From Prakrit *𑀳𑀺𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀢𑀻 (*hallati), related to Sanskrit हिल् (hil, to sport amorously, dally), as well as हिल्लोल (hillola, a wave, surge; a whim) and हिन्दोल (hindola, a swing, swinging cradle, hammock); all these roots share a connotation of vacillating movement. Cognate with Hindi हिलना (hilnā).
