Etymology

創鉅日久 [Traditional Chinese poetry, trad.]
创巨日久 [Traditional Chinese poetry, simp.]
From: The Book of Rites, c. 4th – 2nd century BCE
Chuāngjù zhě qí rìjiǔ, tòng shèn zhě qí yù chí. [Pinyin]
When the trauma has been great, the duration [of the mourning] is long. When the pain has been severe, the healing is slow.

Note that (shèn, “exceedingly”) is replaced by (shēn, “deeply”).
