峇厘

From Malay bâlé (“couch; couch-bed”).^[1] See also Malay balai.

The spelling 峇厘, attested in Lim (1886) and Zhou (2006), appears to be a phonetic spelling.

Adele Fielde defines Teochew 舳 (bha⁷) as "bow of a vessel".

Carstairs Douglas and William Campbell identify the Hokkien 閭 / 闾 (lî) element as "door", while Fielde defines Teochew 閭 / 闾 (li⁵) as "a habitation".

     The boat owner said, "I want to get my money before coming." The people urged him not to, but he still went to the cabin to get it; when he came back, it was already too late.
