- Bìng shèn, Lǚ hòu yíng liángyī. Yī rùjiàn, Gāozǔ wèn yī. Yī yuē: “Bìng kě zhì.” Yúshì Gāozǔ mànmà zhī, yuē: “Wú yǐ bùyī tí sānchǐjiàn qǔ tiānxià, cǐ fēi tiānmìng hū? Mìng nǎi zài tiān, suī Biǎnquè hé yì!” Suì bù shǐ zhìbìng. [Pinyin]
- As his illness continued to grow worse, Empress Lü sent for a skilled doctor. The doctor examined Gaozu and, in answer to his question, replied, “This illness is curable.” With this, Gaozu began to berate and curse him, saying, “I began as a commoner and with my three-foot sword conquered the world. Was this not the will of Heaven? Since my fate lies with Heaven, even Bian Que is nothing good for me!” In the end he would not let the doctor treat his illness.
