North Levantine Arabic

Etymology 1

From the ن that was part of already-pejorative terms like the below, which produced verbs meaning "to act like a..." that naturally ended in ن:

  • كسلان (kaslān, kislān, lazy): تكسلن (tkaslan)
  • شيطان (šayṭān, Satan): تشيطن (tšayṭan, to act wicked, diabolical)
  • ملعون (malʕūn, conniving, despicable, literally cursed): تملعن (tmalʕan)
  • بهسان (bahsān, bihsān, layabout): تبهسن (tbahsan)
  • Possibly زعران (zuʕrān, scoundrels, plural of أزعر (ʔazʕar)): تزعرن (tzaʕran)

The ن that made it into verbs like these was then reanalyzed as a specifically verbal root extension and used productively on other triliteral roots.
