laikas

English

Noun

laikas

  1. plural of laika

Lithuanian

Etymology

Cognate with Latvian laĩks, Old Church Slavonic отлѣкъ (otlěkŭ, remainder). The Latvian metatony (laĩks < *làiks) suggests an original oxytone neuter. On the basis of Ancient Greek λοιπόν (loipón, remainder) we can theoretically posit a Proto-Indo-European *loikʷóm (remainder).[1] In any case, related to laikýti (hold, keep) and li̇̀kti (remain); see these entries for more.[2]
