     Huò yuē: méi yǐ qū wéi měi, zhí zé wú zī; yǐ yī wéi měi, zhèng zé wú jǐng; méi yǐ shū wéi měi, mì zé wú tài. Gù yě. Cǐ wénrén huàshì, xīn zhī qí yì, wèikě míng zhào dà hào, yǐ shéng tiānxià zhī méi yě. [Pinyin]

     Some people say, “The beauty of plum trees lies in their sinuousness while straightness makes them unattractive; the beauty of plum trees lies in their lop-sidedness while uprightness renders them unpicturesque; the beauty of plum trees lies in their sparsity while density reduces their charm." Of course, scholars and painters all understand this. Yet, they can not make it known to the public, or recklessly advocate it as a binding standard to judge all the plum trees in the world.
