From Proto-Vietic *ʔaːwʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ʔaawʔ (“upper garment”). Cognates include Muong ảo, Bahnar ao, Khmer អាវ (ʼaaw), Pacoh ao. The late attested Chinese Chinese 襖 (MC 'awX), if related, was possibly borrowed from Austroasiatic.
