Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *reːl, *rel): semantic 馬 (“horse”) + phonetic 麗 (OC *reːls, *rel).
Etymology
The horses' coat-color 鸝 is possibly related to the birds' color 鸝.
Schuessler (2009) minimally reconstructs 驪 (OC *rê ~ re), which he relates to 盧 (OC *râ) (minimally reconstructed) by pointing out the vowel alternation *a vs. *e ~ i (Schuessler, 2007).
See 盧 for more.
