Glyph origin

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *reːl, *rel): semantic (horse) + phonetic (OC *reːls, *rel).

Etymology

The horses' coat-color is possibly related to the birds' color .

Schuessler (2009) minimally reconstructs (OC *rê ~ re), which he relates to (OC *râ) (minimally reconstructed) by pointing out the vowel alternation *a vs. *e ~ i (Schuessler, 2007).
