Glyph origin

Historical forms of the character
Shuowen Jiezi (compiled in Han)
Small seal script

Originally a pictogram (象形) – an oven. and were added in the bronze inscriptions, and the oven pictogram came to be written , making the current form a phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *b·raː): phonetic (OC *qʰaː) + semantic (pictogram of an oven) + semantic (vessel). This sense (“oven”) is now represented by the character ().

Etymology

black
Inside Chinese, Schuessler (2007) minimally reconstructs (OC *râ), which he relates (OC *rê ~ re) (minimally reconstructed in Schuessler, 2009) by pointing out the vowel alternation *a vs. *e ~ i (Schuessler, 2007);
Outside Chinese, Coblin (1986) compares it to Tibetan རོག་པོ (rog po, black animal; black, reddish, yellowish brown) yet Schuessler (2007) notes that the rimes do not match.
