Etymology

Räsänen reconstructs this root as *hārγï, which is then compared with Finnish paarma (horsefly, gadfly).

Chuvash and Kipchak languages at large seem to have adopted the compound *bal-kūrtnï (literally honey maggot) instead of *ārï.

Noun

*ārï

  1. bee, wasp
