Romanization
zê
- nonstandard spelling of zê̄
Usage notes
- Transcriptions of Mandarin into the Latin script often do not distinguish between the critical tonal differences employed in the Mandarin language, using words such as this one without indication of tone.
Portuguese
Etymology
Inherited from Latin zeta, reduced by analogy with the many other letters that end with the /e/ sound (such as bê and vê). Compare English zee (from zed), Galician zeta, and Spanish zeta.
Portuguese and (American) English are the only languages in which Z is not called zeta or some variation thereof, with a biphonemic (two-sound) short form being used instead.
