Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *r'eːwɢs, *r'eːwɢ): semantic 氵 (“water”) + phonetic 翟 (OC *r'aːwɢ, *l'eːwɢ) – to wash with water.
Etymology
Possibly Sino-Tibetan; compare Burmese လျှော် (hlyau, “to wash (hair, clothes)”) (Schuessler, 2007).
濯 (zhào, “to wash clothes”) < *d-liaukh is exopassive derivative of 濯 (zhuó, “clean, brilliant, glossy; to moisten, to wash”) < *d-liauk; relates to 翟 (dí, “long-tailed pheasants or their plumage”) < *liâuk, owing to the birds' shiny feathers (ibid.).
