Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *praːwɢ): semantic 馬 (“horse”) + phonetic 爻 (OC *ɢraːw). The phonetic component adds part of the meaning if interpreted as "marks".
Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *prawk (“piebald”) (Schuessler, 2007, STEDT under PTB *bruk); cognate with Burmese ပြောက် (prauk, “spotted, speckled”), Jingpho prúʔ, Mru preu (“of mixed colors”). Another Chinese cognate may be 斑 (OC *praːn).
豹 (OC *preːwɢs, “leopard”) is its exopassive derivative, literally meaning, “the spotted one”.

* Angle brackets "<>" indicate infix;
* Hyphen "-" indicates morpheme boundary;
* Period "." indicates syllable boundary.
