Glyph origin

Created for Hokkien. Attested for Hokkien even in the Dictionario Hispanico Sinicum (1626-1642). Ngô͘ Siú-lé (吳守禮) suggests that it is an ideogrammic compound (會意 / 会意): (feathers (representing the feathers of a mother hen)) + (four dots (representing four chicks)) — a mother hen leading and protecting four chicks under her feathers.

Etymology

Possibly from (OC *leds, “to drag”) (Lin, 1999; Yang, 2000; Tu, 2019) or (OC *lebs, “to pull”) (Tu, 2019).

Also compare (chōa, path) (Ong, 2023).
