From Medieval Latin lazulum (through a variant lazurum and with rebracketing of the initial l- as the article l'), from Arabic لَازَوَرْد (lāzaward, “lapis lazuli”), from Persian لاجورد (lâjvard, “lapis lazuli”). Cognate with English azure, French azur, and Portuguese and Spanish azul.
