Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish حق (hak, “the right, justice; a right; due, share; remuneration”), from Arabic حَقّ (ḥaqq, “truth”).[1] The definition evolved from "right, claim, remuneration" > "claim to remuneration or justice" > "retribution, revenge".[2]
