preto
Galician
Etymology
Back-formation from apretar (“tighten, push, squeeze, compress”). The semantic evolution to "dark" comes through the sense of "tight" or "thick".[1] Another common, but less likely, etymology suggested is Vulgar Latin *prettus, from Latin pressus. Compare Portuguese preto, perto, Asturian prietu, Spanish prieto.

Portuguese
Etymology 1
From Old Galician-Portuguese preto (“black, near”), from earlier *apreto, from apretar (Modern Portuguese apertar (“tighten, press, clamp”)), from Late Latin appectorāre, from Latin pectus (“chest”). The semantic evolution to "black" or "dark" comes through the sense of "dense" or "thick". Another common, but less likely, etymology suggested is a Vulgar Latin *prettus, from pressus.
Doublet of perto. Cognate with Galician preto, Asturian and Leonese prietu, Ladino preto, and Spanish prieto.

Derived terms
Noun
preto m (uncountable)
Noun
preto m (plural pretos, feminine preta, feminine plural pretas)
- (dated, now usually offensive) a black person
- (Portugal, colloquial) any of the lowest value euro coins (0.01 €, 0.02 € and 0.05 €) which, being made out of copper-covered steel, are darker than the higher value coins
Usage notes
- Nowadays it's generally considered crass or even outright offensive to use preto as a noun when referring to black people. Use as an adjective is not inherently offensive (such as in "homem preto", compare "a black" vs. "a black person") but may still be considered somewhat "harsher" than negro, which is less offensive in all contexts.
