Etymology 1

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *ēl (realm); cognate with Old Turkic 𐰃𐰠 (é̄l), Bashkir ил (il), Chuvash ял (jal), Kazakh ел (el), Kyrgyz эл (el), Tatar ил (il), Turkmen īl, Uyghur ئەل (el) and Uzbek el.
