Etymology

/ipa yu ru//ifayuru//iwayuru/

Originally a compound of Old Japanese 言は (ipa), the 未然形 (mizenkei, imperfective form) of the verb 言ふ (ipu), modern 言う (iu, to say) + ゆる (yuru, the (れん)(たい)(けい) (rentaikei, adnominal form) of (yu, passive/potential auxilliary verb)).[1]

The kanji spelling is jukujikun (熟字訓), borrowed from Chinese 所謂 / 所谓 (suǒwèi).
