Latin

Alternative forms

Etymology

From -tor +‎ -ius.

Pronunciation

Suffix

-tōrius (feminine -tōria, neuter -tōrium); first/second-declension suffix

  1. -ory; used to form an adjective
    Synonym: -ārius

Usage notes

The suffix -tōrius is added to a participle to create a first- and second-declension adjective.

Examples:
meritōrius (profitable), from meritus (earned), perfect passive participle of mereō (I earn, deserve, merit)
textōrius (of weaving), from textus (woven), perfect passive participle of texō (I weave) — could also be derived from textōr (weaver) with -ius

Note that in some cases, where the suffix -ius is added to an agent noun ending in -tor, the result may be difficult or impossible to distinguish from the addition of -tōrius.
