Etymology

From Eastern Mnong dak Lak (Lak Lake). Spellings with or without the diacritical marks (or even with or without a space) have been found to be inconsistently used by some agencies and institutions (e.g. Nhà khách tỉnh Daklak (Dak Lak Guest House)). A spelling without would be more representative of the original pronunciation (as "đác lác", with dak being the Mnong cognate to Vietnamese nác/nước (water)), although this spelling here is officially used.

Pronunciation

  • (Hà Nội) IPA(key): [ʔɗak̚˧˦ lak̚˧˦]
  • (Huế) IPA(key): [ʔɗak̚˦˧˥ lak̚˦˧˥]
  • (Saigon) IPA(key): [ʔɗak̚˦˥ lak̚˦˥]
  • Phonetic spelling: đắc lắc
