Turkish
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ʲu/, /ʲuː/, /uː/
Letter
û (lower case, upper case Û)
- the letter u with circumflex, used in Turkish spelling, representing /ʲu/, /ʲuː/, or /uː/
Usage notes
Not considered a letter of the alphabet, but the letter u with the circumflex diacritic. Represents palatalized k or g in the same syllable (i.e. /c/, /ɟ/) or long u (/uː/) where it is phonemic.
- şura (“that place”) – /ˈʃuɾa/, şûra (“council”) – /ʃuːˈɾaː/
Note that the palatalizing effect of the letter û means that it can never appear in the same syllable as a /k/ or /ɡ/ sound, even when it would be needed to mark vowel length and distinguish two homographs.
