Etymology
First attested in 840, in Bai Juyi's poem:
- 素事主十年,凡三千有六百日,巾櫛之間,無違無失。今素貌雖陋,未至衰摧,駱力猶壯,又無虺隤。即駱之力,尚可以代主一步;素之歌,亦可以送主一盃。一旦雙去,有去無迴。 [Literary Chinese, trad.]
- From: c. 840, 白居易,《不能忘情吟》, translation based on Arthur Waley's work
- Sù shì zhǔ shínián, fán sānqiān yòu liùbǎi rì, jīnzhì zhījiān, wú wéi wú shī. Jīn Sù mào suī lòu, wèi zhì shuāicuī, luò lì yóu zhuàng, yòu wú huītuí. Jí luò zhī lì, shàng kěyǐ dài zhǔ yībù; Sù zhī gē, yì kěyǐ sòng zhǔ yī bēi. Yīdàn shuāng qù, yǒuqùwúhuí. [Pinyin]
- And I have served you for ten years,
Three thousand and six hundred days;
Patient carrier of towel and comb
Without complaint, without loss.
And now, though my shape is lowly,
I am still fresh and strong.
And the colt is still in his prime,
Without lameness or fault.
Why should you not use the colt's strength
To replace your sick legs? Why should you not use my song to gladden your casual cup?
Need you in one day send both away,
Send them away never to return.
素事主十年,凡三千有六百日,巾栉之间,无违无失。今素貌虽陋,未至衰摧,骆力犹壮,又无虺𬯎。即骆之力,尚可以代主一步;素之歌,亦可以送主一杯。一旦双去,有去无回。 [Literary Chinese, simp.]
