Glyph origin

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *sreŋ, *sreŋs): semantic (mouse; rat) + phonetic (OC *sʰleːŋ, *sreŋs).

Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-(l/r)e(j/ŋ) (squirrel, weasel) (STEDT). Within Chinese, it may be related to (OC *rɯ) (however, see there for more).

Compare Tibetan སྲེ་མོང (sre mong, weasel), Burmese ရှဉ့် (hrany., squirrel), Lepcha [script needed] (să-myóŋ, marmot), Karbi [Term?] (iŋren, mongoose) (< *m-ren), Proto-Karen *hliᴮ (Benedict, 1972; Handel, 2009; Schuessler, 2007, 2009; STEDT). Hill (2019) disputes the Tibetan comparison on phonetic grounds.
