Learned borrowing from Ottoman Turkish قمو (qamu), خمو (hamu), from Proto-Turkic *kamug. Was already obsolete in the Istanbul dialect by the 17th Century, but was reintroduced during the language reforms as a Turkic equivalent of Arabic umum. Doublet of hamı and hamu. Compare Azerbaijani hamı.[1]
